Living in Girona

Just a stones-throw from famous Barcelona, Girona is becoming increasingly popular for students and tourists! Whether you're stopping here on your way to the Catalan capital or staying for longer, here's everything you need to know about each of Girona's districts:

1. Barri Vell

Girona's Old Town is where you'll find most of the city's main tourist attractions, so it's a great area to stay in if it's your first time visiting the area!

Like most of the Spanish cities' historic centres, Barri Vella has no shortage of great restaurants and bars offering traditional Catalan cuisine and an authentic Girona experience, as well as plenty of shopping opportunities -- check out La Fabrica Girona for a laidback atmosphere and a grand selection of Catalan dishes!

Be sure to walk across the Eiffel Bridge and visit the old Town Hall for some of the most impressive architecture in the city.

2. Eixample

If you're looking for easy access to everything the city has to offer, as well as other parts of Catalonia, Eixample might just be the place for you! This district is one of the greenest in Girona, with many beautiful parks and recreational facilities, so it's perfect for active people who like to get out in the sun!

3. Mercadal

Although most of Girona's more popular nightlife venues are in Barri Vell, staying in Mercadal will let you experience how the locals party! This area is known for its upmarket, luxury cocktail bars and clubs.

Mercadal offers easy access to all parts of the city by walking, meaning you're never far from Girona's main tourist attractions. We recommend visiting the Place de la Independencia, where you'll find arguably Girona's best cafes and restaurants.

4. Devesa-GĆ¼ell

Being a relaxed district of Girona, Devesa-GĆ¼ell is perfect for families that want peace and quiet without comprising on distance to all the city's major attractions. This area offers a truly authentic experience.

There's fewer restaurants or bars here, but what the area lacks in gastronomical diversity, it makes up for in green outdoor space, with Girona's biggest park just to the North of the district.

5. El Call

If you're visiting Girona on a budget, El Call could be the perfect district for you! This area encompasses the old Jewish Quarter of the city -- the architecture here is some of the most impressive and intriguing in the city.

6. Lloret de Mar

The district of Lloret de Mar is located about an hour south of Girona's city centre, but it has some of the best beaches that the area has to offer.

Although Lloret de Mar is further from the city than some other of Girona's districts, it's very well connected with Girona's centre and Barcelona's, meaning its s great base for you to explore Catalonia from!

Don't be fooled by the laid-back vibe of Lloret de Mar throughout Winter -- during Summer it turns into a major party town with a young crowd!

7. Figueres

Like Lloret de Mar, Figueres is also located outside of the city of Girona, but is only an easy, short ride on public transport to the centre.

Figueres is home to the Salvador DalĆ museum, one of the towns main attractions and not to be missed! The area embodies the feeling of true Catalan culture and its turbulent past.
