About the event

CUENCA:

One of the most symbolic cities of the Castilla-La Mancha region, spectacularly situated in rocky terrain between the two rivers, Júcar and Huecar, which join together in the lower part of the city.

Before arriving in Cuenca we will have a wander in the Ciudad Encantada which is a natural park made up of rocky formations, and an example of distinct erosion. There is a path that runs 3 kilometres through the Serrania de Cuenca where time has sculpted the landscape and carved amazing shapes in some of it’s rocks. Nowadays, each rock has it’s own name: the dog, the lovers of Teruel, and the elephant to name a few of the most impressive! It’s hard to believe that mother nature is capable of making these giant rocks into such curious sculptures.

This is also where the Hispanic leader Viriato was cremated after a spectacular funeral, he was the leader who fought against the Romans in the second century AC.

After visiting the natural park we will continue to Cuenca.

The city of Cuenca, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and it’s medieval city centre consists of a rich architectural heritage that is extremely well preserved. In fact, a large part of this historical place is a viewpoint for the sickles of the two rivers which thrive in the rich natural surroundings.

Among the most outstanding monuments, we will see are the Casas Colgadad, civil houses from the 15th century that defy gravity situated on the edge of the cliff, the metal bridge of San Pablo of 1902 and the Cathedral, one of the earliest examples of the gothic style in Spain.

Why visit Cuenca?

The old city of Cuenca was largely built without any logic, moulding the buildings one after another, and the result is one of ‘hanging favelas’ that seem to be harmonious; a similar feat to that of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence but on rocks instead of water. Living in these houses seems impossible, with a 50 metre drop from the windows! But nevertheless people will live here as long as they can hang their clothes from the window!

None of Spains cities give the same feeling of the Middle Ages as Cuenca. It’s authentic but without a multitude of tourists that think they know better than the guides about where to go and to take pictures. Cuenca is not so much of a spectacle in the way that Toledo is, it’s real life, more sincere, and therein lies its charm: in the narrow winding streets that lead to the top of the city, in the monasteries hidden in the folds of the mountains, in the ruins of an Arab fortress, in the cliffs, where you can see the city and the valley as if in the palm of your hand…

If you want to spend an incredible day with your friends, come with us to live this exciting adventure that you will never forget !!
